I was told that the Southwest was a fantastic holiday destination for artists, art lovers and collectors and it turned out to be true. The New Mexico state motto is "land of enchantment" because of its scenic beauty, rich history and wonderful people. I finally understand why Georgia O'Keeffe travelled there and stayed. The museum with her namesake is in Santa Fe and a docent gave us a great presentation of the artist and exhibit. I took a very interesting printmaking workshop with Carrie Quade at New Mexico Artspa (what a coincidence). Using terracotta clay as our matrix, we layered and embedded coloured slip into the clay and created wonderful monoprints. Hiking at Tent Rocks and Bandelier Monument was inspiring and I know future artworks will come from the views. Canyon Road is an art lover/collector's dream...over one hundred galleries, boutiques and restaurants in one half mile. A feast for the eyes, soul and stomach! We ended our holiday with a drive to Monument Valley with its world famous red buttes and mesas on the Utah-Arizona border. Then on to the Grand Canyon where the views are breathtaking...I wish everyone could see it as it is impossible to describe! 1400 photos in 12 days and all the images in my brain that are still being processed will inspire new artworks! Stay tuned. |
